Visiting Egypt

Egypt is the kind of countries that change you after you spend enough time there. Sure enough, if you stay there for a week and only visit the touristy places, you’re unlikely to be changed the way I’m talking about. But if you get immersed in the culture and in the local traditions, then you’ll know what I mean.

Egypt is a land of contrasts. It starts with the old and new religions. The country is famous for its notoriously pagan temples, built to worship the pantheon of gods from the Pharaonic ages. This deeply clashes, of course, with the Muslim faith. But it doesn’t seem to faze anyone in the country, by the contrary. It just shows the mentality of people in Egypt, that’s a lot like looking to the future, but keeping an eye on the past. Overlooking the contrast between the rich and the poor in Egypt, which is also stunning in its own sad way, there is also a definite difference between two very different types of tourism in the country.

It used to be that people went to Egypt exclusively to visit the monuments. And they wouldn’t be left wanting either. Between the amazing pyramids of the Giza plain near Cairo, the temple complex of Karnak – with the impressive temple of Amun – and of Luxor, the temple of Abu Simbel with it’s incredible four massive statues of Ramses II, and the amazing burial grounds of the valley of the Kings, there’s so much to see in the country that you’ll easily get lost. In terms of summer holidays, the kind that people like to spend to relax and hang out by the beach, there was very little offer. The best option, years ago, was to go on a cruise of the Nile.

But nowadays all of this has changed. You can now spend your vacations to Egypt and stay in many different holiday resorts by the Mediterranean or the Arabian Sea. And if these are mainly focused at rich tourists, it isn’t solely the case.
